Dear Friends,

As we prepare to celebrate the 4th of July, I find myself thinking about freedom.

This year, that word carries special weight as our country looks toward America’s 250th anniversary. For nearly two and a half centuries, freedom has been one of this nation’s central promises — powerful, but unfinished. For too many people and families impacted by addiction, freedom has too often been replaced by shame, stigma, and systems that treat a health crisis like a criminal problem.

For me, recovery gave me a kind of freedom I never thought possible. Freedom from hopelessness and isolation. Freedom from believing my past had to define my future. Freedom to rebuild, to lead, to serve, and to become part of something bigger than myself.
